His finger trailed lazily down her neck making simple, slow circles that sizzled first, then tingled. But then swirled back up and under the curve of her jaw, lingering there but destined for the delicate maze of her ear.
Almost gracefully, that finger trailed downward caressing the tender flesh there and meandering again around the delicate curve of her jaw.
She shivered, feeling that slick silver shot of adrenaline move through her body and with it the need began its climb upward to her brain.
Continuing its travels his nails breached the maze of her ear and traced the skin there exacting some small insanity that joined that silver adrenaline “drug” in her body and made the warm spread lower.
Her moan was low and enduring for only a moment as he turned her toward him.

And so this is scene we turn over in our minds as we pick lingerie. What do you want to do with it? Is lounging about on your own the immediate goal? It never ceases to amaze me how the minds of men and women alike see to inflict pain and torture upon themselves in the name of fashion. Ouch, it hurts just thinking about it.

The corsets of the late 19th century purportedly cause cracked ribs, asthma, indigestion and variety of other ailments. But our waists were hourglass, nothing else was more important.

I take my hat off to Mary Phelps Jacobs who is credited with the first patent for a bra back in 1913. Here was a pragmatic socialite who had to come up with an alternative to the whale bone corset she would have been forced to wear under a shear new evening gown.

Whether the whale bones poking out around her plunging neckline convinced her to look in another direction or having cracked a rib or two in the past was the catalyst, Mary pitched the corset and selected two silk hankies and some pink ribbon to get her through the night without looking hog-tied. It worked and the first patented bra came into existence. Amazing what a little pain will do for you.

Now in 2007, we can satisfy the need for improvement of our “look” by browsing our favorite nice and naughty sites. They’re out there in abundance…. Everything from fishnet tights and teddies to bustiers (no whale bone here… but you can reduce that waistline with one). My favorite now is a camisole and loose knickers… easy in, easy out and they look great.

I think the corsets now, while tight fitting, don’t cause rib cage damage as they did way back when. Thank God for that. At least we’ve found a place in time when looking vampy and sexy isn’t going to send you to the nearest emergency room. We’ve moved forward. I think there should be a major celebration in remembrance of Mary Phelps Jacobs and the first bra patent in 1913. I wonder if those hankies had wire under cups?

A brief history of Lingerie
1907: American Vogue illustrated a rigid, boned brassiere with no division between the breasts. Believe it or not, it was actually worn over the corset .
1913: Mary Phelps devised the first modern bra with two lacy hankerchiefs and some help from her maid. The following year she sold the patent to a Mr Warner whom she had met at a garden party. That discussion would have been interesting.
1918: Corset-makers were running up bras designed to flatten rather than enhance. This did not last too long. You see, they were ignoring the fact that curves are much more alluring than flatness.
1925: Bras first had divisions between the breasts and adjustable straps. Thus, the first bra was introduced.
1938: Finally acknowledging that breasts did not come in standard sizes, bra-makers introduced A,B, C and D cups. Men everywhere rejoiced.
1940: Padding was first sneaked into bra cups. It was a deceptive and manipulative move. To this day, not one male has complained.
1950s: Strapless bras appeared and women were now able to wear an off-the-shoulder dress and still use a bra.
1959: Warners and Du Pont produced Lycra which we have continued to use ever since then. As a result, the many varied fashions and designs of lingerie have continued to expand.
1965: The no-bra bra was introduced to give support with a nothing-under effect. Half-hearted women’s libbers rejoiced. Males unconsciously decided to let women’s libbers enjoy themselves while they continued to enjoy women who looked good in a nice set of sexy lingerie.
